Educational Programs and Artist Residencies
Horse Warriors™
Horse Warriors™ is a year-round, equine-facilitated program for people with disabilities and at-risk youth, ages 6–18, located in Jackson, Wyoming. Students interact with horses by contributing to their care and upkeep, arena riding, and trail riding in the back country. These experiences provide subject matter that encourages students to express themselves through journal writings, drawings, music, and other art media, which aids in improving students’ motion and/or behavioral problems.
Seton House Art Classes
This program will continue to provide art supplies and instructors for youth in grades K–12 who reside in a homeless shelter for single-parent families located in Casper.
In-House Classes—School
VSA arts of Wyoming will continue to provide art classes at its facility to senior high school students, adults, and occasionally younger students, all having a disability. A four-week-long summer art camp will also be available.
After-School Art Programs
This program promotes after-school art programs at elementary schools and an art museum/children’s discovery center located in Casper throughout the school year. A culminating event, such as an exhibition of the students' art work or the presentation of a play, is planned at the end of the school year.
Creative Arts Program @ Ark Regional Services
This activity will provide three artist-in-residence programs for people having a disability, as well as two performing arts projects utilizing music, theater, and/or dance.
Easter Seals Players
This program will provide materials and supplies for people with disabilities to create two–three performances of a spoof play created from a television show.
ARTCORE
This ongoing program provides school workshops led by performing artists for students with and without disabilities in grades K–12. Music and performing arts workshops are scheduled for 2008.
Pinedale Fine Arts Council
The Pinedale Fine Arts Council partners with VSA arts of Wyoming to provide workshops/classes for schools located in southwestern Wyoming. Students will have the chance to choose between participating in: a textile design residency, quilting residency, dance workshop, and writing residency. Music, comedy, and other performances are also offered.
Casper Children's Theatre
This on-going program provides theater classes for three different age groups. Classes will culminate in three public performances for each group.
Sheridan WYO Theater
The Sheridan WYO Theater presents educational programs at schools in Northern Wyoming using theater arts, American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf issues in order to create a greater sensitivity to deafness and other diversity issues. School workshops, classes, and matinees are offered.
Casper Youth Orchestra
This program will provide six to eight band assistants to work one-on-one with students having special needs on an as-needed basis in all three sections of the orchestra.
Northwest Jazz Festival
This program will provide two days of nonstop performances by school bands and choirs in Powell, Wyoming. Approximately 15 workshops and clinics on individual instrument topics, improvisation, vocal techniques, and performance skills will be offered to students throughout the festival.
Nicolaysen Art Museum and Discovery Center Program
The Nicolaysen Museum provides educational programs through the Discovery Center Education Program. The Art’s Cool After School program provides students in grades K–6 an opportunity to learn various art forms and techniques through after school activities. The NIC will work with disability organizations to provide stimulating art activities for visitors with disabilities. In order to increase participation of students with a disability, notices of these programs will be sent to special education and FLS instructors at all schools in Natrona County
Professional Development and Technical Assistance
Art Assistance and Training
VSA arts of Wyoming will provide art assistance, training, and/or art supplies to assist aspiring artists with disabilities with their career development.
Public Awareness and Outreach
Kids on the Block (KOB)
This ongoing program makes available a troupe of 20 puppets, each with a different disability to travel statewide to schools, conferences, and other facilities to teach people about various disabilities and to promote inclusion. From one to all twenty puppets may travel to schools, elder care centers, or other organizations throughout the year.
The Christmas Pageant of Peace Program
This ongoing program provides supplies for the preparation of Christmas ornaments that will be created by adults with developmental disabilities. The ornaments will be displayed on a Tree of Peace in Washington, D.C. and on the Governors’ tree in the State Capitol Building.
